Henning Lucius started studying piano early and was accepted into the Hamburg Conservatory of Music (Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg) as a student of Peter-Jürgen Hofer, then later pursuing his studies with Gernot Kahl and Volker Banfield up until his graduate recital.

During his master’s degree at Indiana University in Bloomington/USA, he studied with György Sebok  and Shigeo Neriki. Masterclasses with Peter Feuchtwanger, Jörg Demus, Elisabeth Leonskaja  and Christoph Eschenbach left profound musical impressions on him, and his work with  Rostislav Dubinsky, Ralf Gothóni, Peter Elkus, Hartmut Höll, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Aribert Reimann have had a pivotal influence on hischambermusic and lied accompaniment. Henning Lucius has been awarded several scholarships and prizes, including  the ’German Music Competition,’ in connection with the series ’Young Artists' Concerts.’

He currently teaches at the Hamburg Academy of Music (Hamburger Konservatorium), the conservatories in Lübeck and Rostock (Musikhochschule Lübeck, HMT Rostock), before in Bremen (until 2005). He has accompanied masterclasses with Margreet Honig, Judith Beckmann, Doreen DeFeis and James Hooper, Helen Donath, Klesie Kelly, Thomas Quasthoff, Edith Mathis, Peter Schreier, Sibylla Rubens, Christiane Oelze, Michaela Schuster, Siegfried Jerusalem,Anne Schwanewilms, Thomas Heyer, the Russian violinist Roman Nodel and the violist Andra Darszins, partneringMaxence Larrieu, Sabine Meyer and the Diotima-Quartet lately. Henning Lucius plays concerts in Germany and abroad and has been invited to several festivals, e.g. Schleswig Holstein Music Festival, the Brandenburg Summer Concert Series, the Bremer Festival, Holdenstedter Schlosswochen and the Sommerliche Musiktage Hitzacker.

In 2008 he toured Japan, giving classes and concerts, 2011 Lithuania (Trio Coloris), South America ( Graciela de Gyldenfeldt) and 2017 China.

He was involved in editing the ‘Ein Deutscher Vaccai’ by Steffen Wolf, followed by a second edition of the ‘Duett Vaccai, being released in 2022. Together with Cord Garben he was co-editor of the Grand Trio op.12 by Carl Loewe, which was published 2019 by Florian-Noetzel-Verlag.

Henning Lucius has played highly acclaimed concerts with different ensembles, the flautists Jürgen Franzand Daniel Tomann (Elbphilharmonie Hamburg), and as a piano duo with Matthias Veit since 1995.

Until 2015 Henning Lucius was artistic director of Appen Classics.In addition to his numerous broadcast recordings, television and CD recordings reflect his artistic career.
