Marléne Douty

Marléne Douty is a Togolese director, actor and playwright. He has performed with several theatre companies in Africa and has taken part in numerous theatre festivals in Africa and Europe. He directs the Clinik'Art theatre company and is also President of the Togolese Theatre Federation.

He began his career as an actor at a very young age. Between 2003 and 2022, he performed in some thirty shows in Togo, Niger, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Benin and Mali. In 2014, he wrote and published his first play: “14, pas 11”, which was a great success in Togo and Benin. His third play “Apocalypse 12:09” was awarded the Literary Prize of the University of Lomé in 2023.

As a director, he has devised and directed major projects with his company, including the Théâtre Chez Vous project, which put on in houses, 169 performances of a Chekhov play in 5 of Togo's local languages during confinement. He has worked in several theatres in Germany, including Konstanztheater and Münchner Kammerspiele, and has collaborated on several international projects on German colonisation in Togo.

As a theatre educator, Marléne Douty explores transcultural educational theatre inspired by Togo's traditional performance practices. Since 2021, he has been teaching in Professional Masters in Theatre-Education at the University of Lomé. He has twice come to teach at hmt as part of the collaboration between the University of Lomé and hmt Rostock. He will be working at the hmt Rostock as a guest teacher for 12 months from April 2025, thanks to financial support from the DAAD.
