Masterclass Tuba Vikentios Gionanidis
Vikentios Gionanidis is a Greek tuba player, educator and arranger. He received his first music lessons in e.g. harmony and tuba as part of the wind band “Mantzaros” and later on at the Conservatory of Corfu. He studied in the renowned tuba class of Prof. Jens Björn-Larsen at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media from October 2007 to February 2013.
Vikentios won two of the foremost international competitions for brass instruments. In September 2010, he won the First Prize as well as the Audience Prize for the best interpretation of contemporary music at the international Aeolus International Competition for Wind Instruments in Dusseldorf. He then won the First Prize at the International Instrumental Competition in Markneukirchen in May 2012. He is also a prize-winner at the National Music Academy Competition in Lübeck and the International Brass Competition in Gdańsk, Poland.
As a soloist, he has played with the Folkwang Chamber Orchestra Essen, the Chursächsische Philharmonic, the Orchestra of the Plauen-Zwickau Theatre, the Gdańsk Academy of Music Orchestra, the Göttingen Symphony Orchestra and the Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra.
Gionanidis has collaborated with several renowned orchestras including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Bayerische Staatsorchester, Staatskapelle Berlin, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, the Frankfurt Radio Symphony, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande (Geneva), Staatsorchester Stuttgart, the Hamburg State Opera, Komische Oper Berlin, the Konzerthausorchester Berlin, the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, and the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig etc.
He is particularly passionate about chamber music. In addition to his work as an orchestral musician, Vikentios has performed as a guest with many groups, including Ensemble Modern in Frankfurt (contemporary music), Stockholm Chamber Brass, German Opera Brass (brass ensemble of the Deutsche Oper Berlin), Salaputia Brass, 10-for Brass, Trio 21Meter20 and others.
Vikentios has been teaching orchestral and soloist works for tuba at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media since 2014, supporting his former teacher Prof. Jens Björn-Larsen. He is a regular guest artist and teacher at major festivals and masterclasses in countries such as Poland, Spain, Greece, Germany, Sweden, Scotland, and the US.
Vikentios Gionanidis also arranges music for brass instruments. Many of his arrangements have been published and are played all over the world, e.g. in Germany, Greece, Hungary, Austria, the United Kingdom, Japan, China, South America, Canada, and the US. His etude books 29 Bel Canto Studies and 24 Advanced Studies for tuba and trombone are well known all over the globe.
He has been tuba player in the orchestra at Deutsche Oper Berlin since the season 2013/2014. Vikentios is a Buffet Crampon artist and plays B&S tubas.
