Masterclass Voice Zoryana Kushpler
Zoryana Kushpler studied at the Mykola Lysenko Lviv National Music Academy (Prof. I. Kushpler) and later at the Hamburg University of Music and Drama (Prof. J. Beckmann). She won prizes at international competitions, including First Prize at the ARD International Music Competition in Munich. From 2007 to 2020, she was a member of the ensemble at the Vienna State Opera, where she sang the roles Ulrica ("Un ballo in maschera"), Fenena ("Nabucco"), Olga ("Eugen Onegin"), Polina ("Pique Dame"), Marcellina ("Le nozze di Figaro"), Magdalena ("Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg"), Waltraut ("Götterdämmerung"), Preziosilla ("La forza del destino"), Adelaide ("Arabella") and many more. She also regularly performs as a singer and guest soloist at the Vienna Volksoper, in roles such as Carmen, Prinz Orlofsky ("Die Fledermaus"), Magdalena ("Rigoletto"), Giulietta ("Les contes d ́Hoffmann”) and others.
Zoryana Kushpler has also performed as a lieder singer alongside her twin sister Olena in several major concert series, such as the Rheingau Music Festival, Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, at the Laieszhalle in Hamburg, the Konzerthaus Berlin, the Wiener Musikverein and elsewhere. She gave her US debut with the Cleveland Orchestra in 2012, under conductor Franz Welser-Möst, singing the soloist part in G. Mahler’s 3rd symphony. She debuted in the Carnegie Hall with Beethoven’s 9th Symphony together with the Vienna Philharmonic under Franz Welser-Möst in 2014, sang the part of Fenena in “Nabucco” at the side of the outstanding tenor Placido Domingo at the Vienna National Opera and gave her debut in “Elektra” under conductor Semion Bychkov in the Royal Albert Hall. In 2014, she also sang the role of Margarita in E. Wolf-Ferrari’s opera “Die vier Grobiane” at the Prinzregententheater in Munich, Germany.
Her artistic work is closely tied to Ukraine. The singer has performed the role of Carmen at the National Opera of Ukraine in Kyiv on several occasions and at the Odesa National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre. She took part in the festival LvivMozArt in 2017 and 2018. She performed G. Mahler’s 2nd symphony at the celebrations to mark the 150-year anniversary of the National Opera of Ukraine in 2017, and participated in the project “I will return to Ukraine” on Sophia Square in Kyiv in 2018. In 2016, she was elected “Personality of the Year” in the field of Ukrainian culture and art. She has been Honorary President of the Galician Music Society since 2019.
Zoryana Kushpler has performed in several radio and television productions. Her latest CD recording features lieder by Dmitri Schostakovich to texts by Marina Zwetajewa. She already sang on the soundtrack of “La Tregua” (the film was directed by Francesco Rosi) back in 1996, lending her voice to actress Agnieszka Wagner. For Capriccio Delta, she recorded the CDs “Slavonic Souls” (2010) and “Canciones españolas” (2015) together with her sister Olena Kushpler, and lieder by Alexander von Zemlinsky with the Linos Ensemble in 2017. She also performed alongside the Vienna State Opera and the Vienna Philharmonic under conductor Christian Thielemann in the recording of Richard Wagner’s “Der Ring des Nibelungen” for Deutsche Grammophon. A new CD with Ukrainian arias and orchestral lieder was released by “Gramola” in autumn 2023. Zoryana Kushpler still performs as a guest soloist at the Vienna State Opera and the Vienna Volksoper. Zoryana Kushpler has been professor at the Mozarteum University Salzburg since 2023.
